We
only use 6-8 lb of weights in cold water with our weighted stainless steel backplate.
Dissatisfied with the commercial designs, we have made our own weight pockets
from heavy duty polypro webbing and plastic buckles. Each pocket accommodates
a standard scuba weight up to 4 lb. The pockets could be made slightly larger
to fit the 5 lb weight.
The pockets are very compact and fit well next to the canister light. The weights are easy to remove and replace, above and below the surface.
It should be obvious from the pictures how they are made. Basic machine sewing skills are needed. It is important to make the seams in the correct order, there is not much room to maneuver. Work out the sequence before starting:
1. Attach the narrow strap to the wide webbing with one bottom front seam.
2. Attach the female (bottom) half of the buckle.
3. Make two seams on the back to form the belt attachment loop.
4. Attach the male (top) half of the buckle.
5. Complete the pocket by sewing the ends of the wide webbing together.
Do not forget to burn the ends of the webbing and the thread with a lighter. Use tight zigzag stitch.
